Mississippi Public Safety Commissioner: Immigration enforcement has high costs

January 12, 2011 § Leave a comment

Public Safety Commissioner Stephen Simpson opined on an immigration bill that, if signed into law, would let Mississippi police demand proof of status from drivers stopped for traffic violations. His department would need to hire 11 experts, at about $1.2 million a year, who would review suspected illegal immigrants’ documents to determine their validity, Simpson said. Sheriffs then would have to pay the cost of housing immigrants and transporting them to the nearest Immigration detention center in Louisiana. (excerpts from commercial appeal)
