Chile applies for US visa waiver program

January 12, 2011 § 1 Comment

Arturo Fermandois, the Chilean ambassador to Washington, said Chile would have to share information on criminals and terrorists within its borders and would also have access to FBI databases, the Santiago Times reported. Citizens of 36 countries, mostly in Europe, can use a visa waiver to travel to the US for up to 90 days without a visa. Fermandois said Chile may have to wait at least 2 years because another requirement is that less than 3% of visa applications be rejected. The rate has fallen from 9% in 2008 to 5% last year. Once Chile is approved its citizens would no longer have to go through a personal interview at the US Embassy in Santiago. Applicants have to wait as long as 2 months for the interview. (upi)
