DREAM Act immigrants next move: donate blood

December 3, 2010 § Leave a comment

Illegal immigrant students say they are shedding blood over the “DREAM Act” — literally. The students donated blood Friday at Harvard University and other college blood drives. It’s part of a nationally organized effort to push a federal proposal in the current Congress that would give some a pathway to citizenship through college enrollment or military service. The immigrant students say the blood donations show that they ready to perform community service to demonstrate that they are part of American society. Advocates say others have donated blood in California, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Texas and Virginia. Red Cross spokeswoman Stephanie Millian says blood donors need to show identification, but blood collection workers don’t check immigration status. (San Francisco Examiner)
